Wood Staining Done Right
the First Time
Staining isn't just applying color. It's surface preparation, grain conditioning, correct product selection, and a topcoat that keeps Central New York's seasons from undoing all of it.
Why Most Staining Jobs Fail Early
Stain applied to unconditioned wood blotches. It raises the grain. On soft woods like pine, it absorbs unevenly in ways that can't be fixed with another coat. The only remedy is sanding back to bare wood and starting over — and if that wood is already on a deck or exterior surface, that's a significant job.
The second most common failure is skipping the UV topcoat on exterior work. A stain that looks perfect in June will be grey and peeling by October if it's not properly sealed against Central New York sun and frost cycles.
The Hard Truth
"Stain without conditioning blotches and raises grain. It can't be undone without sanding back to bare wood. We don't skip that step."
Our Standard Staining Process
- Wood species identification — stain reaction varies significantly
- Cleaning and removal of previous failing stain or sealer
- Sanding to correct surface profile and open grain
- Pre-stain wood conditioner on all soft and blotch-prone species
- Test application on an inconspicuous area before full commitment
- Solid or semi-transparent stain applied by correct method for species
- UV-resistant topcoat or varnish on exterior applications
- Final inspection and touch-up by lead finisher

Craftsmen Who Understand Wood
Species-Specific Experience
Pine, cedar, oak, walnut — each species stains differently. Our finishers have worked with them all, including the old-growth species common in Central New York's historic homes.
Period-Matched Staining
Working on a historic property? We can color-match to original finishes, archived photos, or period-accurate references. We've done it on landmark buildings across the region.
No Subcontractors
Custom staining is skilled work. We don't hand it to whoever's available. Every staining job is done by trained Gallagher employees, accountable to our standard.
